EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Steve bares, CHAIRMAN

Serve as the Association’s regular advisors to ensure overall viability, both operationally and financially.

  • Oversee continuity of the board's vision within committees and staff establishing the Association as the central authority on the state’s life sciences industry
  • Regularly review and monitor the financial activities of the Association
  • Ensure a robust communications program for members, prospects and stakeholders (communications staff activity)
  • Ensure interesting and informative speakers, programming and activities (staff and programming chair activity)

 

MEMBERSHIP

CHAIRMEN: BILL TAAFFE RETIRED, ICON CLINICAL RESEARCH; paul Fitzpatrick, advanced catheter therapies

Provide strategic guidance to attract and retain a membership base that advances the Association's goals through active member participation and financial support.

  • Evaluate Association’s current membership levels and establish new levels that will ensure financial security
  • Establish and oversee a program for member recruitment

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPMENT

CHAIRMAN: TOM BALLARD, PYA Analytics

Align the Association with key stakeholders and activities that advance the life sciences industry in Tennessee.

  • Create partnerships with economic development agencies – both state, national and local - on recruitment activities, as well as act as a resource for agencies in marketing Tennessee’s assets in the industry
  • Work within existing frameworks to promote technology transfer at Tennessee’s research institutions. Develop recommendations to increase commercialization.
  • Partner with entrepreneur and innovation organizations on mentoring and supporting programs that encourage innovation and growth of early-stage life sciences companies
  • Oversee Association’s presence at BIO International Convention


EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

CHAIRMEN: DAVID BLACK, AEGIS SCIENCES; BRUCE DOEG, BAKER DONELSON

Provide a bridge between the higher education institutions and life science companies surrounding workforce development issues within the state of Tennessee. This committee seeks to provide a forum for communication and coordination between these two entities to provide a robust, highly-skilled, and technically savvy workforce to fuel the needs of a growing biotechnology industry.

  • Identify the primary issues surrounding workforce development by implementing a study of both private companies and academic institutions in order to identify these issues, as well as, provide supporting data. This data will then be used as a platform to provide opportunities for communication on how to best solve workforce development issues. It is this link, between public and private institutions that will ultimately help grow and nurture the next generation of talent for a thriving life science industry.
  • Create partnerships within the full spectrum of education and workforce development – primary education, secondary education, post-secondary, graduate level and workforce training programs - to establish activities and programming that bring additional skilled workforce for the state’s the life sciences industry

POLICY AND ADVOCACY

CHAIRMEN: JOSH BROWN, PFIZER; PAUL SELTMAN, SMITH & NEPHEW

Establish and advocate a legislative and administration policy agenda that supports the goals of the Association and of the industry in Tennessee.

  • Identify issues that impact the life sciences industry and establish the Association’s legislative agenda
  • Oversee Life Science Tennessee Day on the Hill in Nashville and the BIO Fly In in Washington D.C.
  • Create a program to influence our state and federal elected officials through member awareness and advocacy efforts

PROGRAMMING

CHAIRMeN: KEN WOODY, INNOVA; alan Bentley, Vanderbilt CTTC

Ensure interesting and informative speakers, programming and activities that are well received by membership.


BIOAGRICULTURE

CHAIR: PETER NELSON, ag innovation group

Advance the bio-agriculture, biomass and biofuels industry in Tennessee.
Establish and advocate for sound policy agenda that supports the goals of the Association and of the industry in Tennessee.

  • Create a statewide community interested in advancing the industry
  • Identify issues that impact the industry
  • Establish a legislative agenda and advocacy efforts
